My Days of Wine

Rosemary Nicolson

Rosemary was employed at BCWD in 1947 and first job was on the switchboard. Alway remembers how she could see the chimney smoke from the boiler stacks at the Winery. It was either a head wind push on the bicycle to work and a tail wind home or vice-versa.

Was being courted by Murray Nicolson, who was employed at BCPU factory, and Murray would ride over to the Winery in his lunch hour. Married in January 1950.

Remembers that Jean Bowie was secretary to Lyle Nairn after "Warrie" Garnett left.

Pat Dansie was in the office.

Max Schultz, son of Charlie Schultz was in the worhshop.

Bill Kidman was in the Bond Store.

A lad named Cornish was employed in the Laboratory.

A Mr. Butterworth worked in the Cellar.

Re the Wright sisters; Chickie had left before Rosemary started, but Shirley was there in the Office.

Lorna Setterberg was employed in the Tarac Office. Married named Brearley.

Estelle Law was late for work and eventually turned up without her small motorbike. Apparently had a spill before the Winkie road bridge. Estelle had no recollection and must have been concussed.

Shipping Agents in this period were Begg & Sons (I assume at Pt Adelaide).

Wedding Notice Murray Pioneer 23rd February 1950

NICOLSON - SWINSTEAD WEDDING

On January 21 the Berri Methodist Church was beautifully decorated with white flowers for the wedding of Rosemary, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs W.H. Swinstead, of Winkie, to Murray Thomas, son of Mr and Mrs D.J. Nicolson, of Kingswood.

The Rev. R. Brook officiated and Mrs R.P. James was organist.

The bride who entered the church with her father, was attractively frocked in a gown of French Lame lace featuring a deep neckline edged with frilled revers and fastened to the waist with miniature pearl buttons. The skirt fell gracefully into a short train, and peaked sleeves were worn to the wrist. Her finger-top tulle veil, originally worn by her paternal grandmother, was held by a corocnet of orange blossom and the bouquet was of water lilies and tuberoses.
Her only attendant was her sister Monica, who wore a crsip self patterned white organdie overgold taffeta. Her fitting bodice with its deep neckline was finished with a double collar. The gold tonings of the tiger lilies and frangipani made an unusual note. She wore a circlet of frangipani ihn her hair.
Mr Noel Bantisch was best man.

Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the Berri Hotel.

The bridal couple spent their honeymoon in the Eastern States.

For travelling the bride wore an orchid pink frock with tucked bolero and hat to match, with brown accessories.
