My Days of Wine

Bonny Maitland

Recollections from his daughter Pauline.

The Maitland family resided in Malaga Terrace in 1937. Pauline was 3 years or so and in the previous years Bonny would ride many miles to get an hours work. Their home in Berri must have been his start at the winery and a loan from the Bank. Bonny used to ride his bike to the winery and only in latter years did he drive their car.

Pauline recalls that Bonny and Joyce bought a 1926 Chevrolet for £50 that had been stored in old farm shed at Palmer. Covered in bird droppings and minus a hood, Bonny drove it back to Berri. The car was used for special occasions and we normally walked or rode our bicycles.
So I guess Bonny started at Berri in 1936 or 1937.

He enlisted in the Army in September 1942 and discharged in 1946 (1324 days) and returned to Berri Winery and retired in 1973 (DOB 1908).

Bonny passed away in December, 1986.
